Apple iPhone 12: Everything We Know So Far [Updated]

Apple’s iPhone 12 is already subject . As such, this article will roundup everything we know so far. There’s a lot to love and some disappointments as well. But, overall, Apple is heading for its most exciting iPhone upgrade in years. Here are the reasons why.

Tip: this article will be regularly updated, so bookmark it (02/03 new battery life updates - not all good - below)

. This has now been leaked by multiple sources and it will enable the iPhone 12 to actively map its environment up to about 15 feet. It will be laser-based unlike the 25-50 centimetre range of the dot projector-based 3D mapping system used in Face ID on the front of current iPhones.

While a 3D camera may help photographs with things like Portrait mode (where depth measurement is a major factor), the big win is (AR). Expect Apple to make a big deal of this come launch time.

Design - Perhaps the one area where the iPhone 12 may disappoint is how it looks. With . There is still time for this to change, but Apple looks set to make its biggest advances internally this year.

In fact, on a superficial level, the biggest external change may be Apple's decision to drop its popular Midnight Green finish this year and introduce a new Navy Blue option for the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max. While I'm a big fan of the green, the new blue looks superb in renders .

  • iPhone 12: 6.1-inch (same as iPhone 11)
  • iPhone 12 Pro: 5.4-inch (Vs 5.8-inch iPhone 11 Pro)
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max 5G: 6.7-inch (Vs 6.5-inch iPhone 11 Pro Max)

Apple will also introduce is reports that Apple will source up to 45M OLED panels from China's BOE as it reduces dependence on Samsung over all. Whether this results in good/bad iPhone editions as with Intel/Qualcomm modems in the past remains to be seen, but Apple's strict quality controls usually avoids this.

Biometrics - Face ID is not expected to change much in the iPhone 12 other than slight performance tweaks and, perhaps, a fractionally smaller notch. But the return of Touch ID integrated into the display, is a major event which has been . While facial recognition and fingerprint sensors have their own pros and cons, the real value of its return is when used in conjunction with Face ID for extremely high level security. Hopefully, where and when will be user selectable.

Apple has renewed its exclusive manufacturing deal with TSMC to be the sole supplier of its next-gen A14 iPhone chipset with production beginning as soon as Q2. DigiTimes says it will be the first A Series chip to be manufactured with a 5nm process (A12 / A13 were 7nm) which should both boost performance and increase efficiency. It could also increase Apple's (already large) advantage over rivals with Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 865 flagship chipset for Android phones still using 7nm.

Adding to this, has attained a research note from UBS analysts revealing the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max will have 6GB RAM. This is 50% more than the iPhone 11 range, which was limited to 4GB. The entry-level iPhone 12 (effectively the iPhone XR3) will stick with 4GB RAM.

Analysis from is perhaps the biggest talking point though, following a deep drive, it concludes that Apple's A14 chipset could be a game-changer for the smartphone and tablet market. Based on a new 5nm manufacturing process, it has the potential to bring CPU performance in-line with the 15-inch MacBook Pro alongside a leap of almost 50% in GPU speeds. This is astonishing stuff. Moreover, it could pave the way for Apple to finally replace Intel chipsets in its MacBook ranges with Apple silicon. If right, MacWorld may well have unearthed the headline story from the iPhone 12 launch.

02/03 Update - Battery Life - If there is one area of concern, however, it could be battery life. Respected Chinese site Mac Otakara says the phones will be up to 10% slimmer which . Hopefully, Apple has found a way to squeeze more mAh into their slight larger footprints despite the reduction in thickness as great battery life has been a standout feature of the current iPhone 11 range.

Connectivity / Networking - there is a lot of speculation that the Lightning port will be . This remains to be seen as talk is also building that Apple will move the iPhone to a port-less, wireless charging-only model in the next few years. As such, introducing USB-C for a short time would seem pointless.

More certain, is the arrival of 5G. Apple will introduce 5G across and (given the still-limited nature of 5G networks around the world) the really good news is...

Pricing - official prices for the iPhone 12 range have yet to leak but word from Ming-Chi Kuo, one of the most accurate Apple insiders, is there will be for the step-up to 5G. This would be a coup as 5G has added hundreds of dollars to 5G versions of rival phones up until this point.

On the flip side, be aware that Apple has just , in some cases substantially, which means you may have to pay out more than you expect if you want to upgrade to the iPhone 12 through Apple directly.

Release Date - there’s nothing on this at present, but Apple has a long tradition of launching new iPhones in September and (the early release of , aside) I don’t expect that to change in 2020.

The Budget 2020 iPhone - Want a new iPhone in 2020, but can't afford an iPhone 12? You're in luck. Apple will launch a new budget iPhone based-on the iPhone 8 design in Q1 this year. It may look old on the outside but it will feature the A13 chipset and primary camera from the iPhone 11-range making this a seriously powerful pocket-friendly phone. Furthermore, it might be just the first of .

Conclusion

Will the iPhone 12 be worth the wait? On paper, yes. This is one of Apple’s biggest upgrades in years. That said, the lack of external changes for a third generation may put some users off and the iPhone 11 range is already the most well-rounded smartphone line-up of 2019. It is also available with .

After incremental upgrades in 2019, Apple is going for it in 2020 and a big motivation is .

Yes, 2020 is shaping up to a great year for smartphone fans.

I have an Iphone 5S running on iOS 9.3.2 and I also cannot update it.

Every time I press the "Update" button in Itunes it either dosen't do anything or it opens up a dialogue box that closes after a few seconds.

Updating through the phone also dosen't work, it promps me to update through the computer.

I think this is issue has to do with the fact that we are trying to update from iOS 9.

The Cost Of Making An IPhone Iphone 12 Estimated Price

The Cost Of Making An IPhone Iphone 12 Estimated Price

The Cost of Making an iPhone

Apple ( for smartphones, behind Samsung and Huawei.

The Cost of Making an iPhone

Apple controls 14.5% of the global smartphone market share, while Samsung controls 21.8% and Huawei controls 17.6%. That being said, in terms of profits from smartphones, Apple is the leader. The company took 66% of the industry's profits and 32% of revenue in 2019.

It seems that the company must be making a sizable markup if it's the leader in profits but third in sales. Let's find out how much it costs to make this iconic product.

Source:

iPhone 11 Pro Max

The current and most expensive iPhone is the iPhone 11 pro max, released in late 2019. Depending on the storage size, the cost of the phone ranges from $1,099 to $1,449. It's quite a hefty price tag, especially when it's estimated that the actual cost of all the components to make the phone amounts to approximately $490.50.

The Cost of Making an iPhone

Cost Breakdown

The breakdown of the cost of the components of the phone is as follows:

  • Screen: $66.50
  • Battery: $10.50
  • Triple Camera: $73.50
  • Processor, Modems, and Memory: $159
  • Sensors, Holding Material, Assembly, and Other: $181

It's important to note that this cost does not include (R&D) or marketing, which would increase the price of the phone.

Labor Costs

The iPhone is primarily assembled in China by Taiwanese companies, such as Foxconn. The starting wage for an iPhone worker in China is $3.15 per hour. Much lower than the in the U.S., which is $7.25 per hour. In 2018, it was quoted that employees at Foxconn make around $300 a month.

The Cost of Making an iPhone

According to Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, the reason to build in China is not because of the lower . If this were the case, Apple could make its phones in even cheaper locations. The main reason, according to Cook, is the skill required in tooling engineering. He claims that the specific skill set is no longer available in the U.S., but in China the expertise is prevalent.

In addition, logistically, China makes the most sense to ship a product around the world as the country has seven of the world's largest 10 ports. If Apple were to build the iPhone in the U.S., it would only be able to build a small amount a year at a significantly higher cost.

Labor Conditions

In the early days of iPhone production, there were reports that labor conditions for workers were awful, however, this seems to have improved over time. According to some employees at Foxconn, the conditions are no worse when compared to other factories in China, and sometimes better. Outside of the big cities in China, most of the country is still underdeveloped and the cost of living is low, resulting in wages that may appear low when compared to Western society. The issue, really then, is not the wages, but the conditions employees endure to earn those wages.

The Cost of Making an iPhone

The Bottom Line

Apple is a very company, and as consumers, we pay a premium price for the products the company makes. Some people purchase Apple products to become part of the 'trendy' Apple brand. However, for Apple to maintain its high profits and low manufacturing costs, the company will continue to manufacture its phones in China, as it looks for other low-cost locations, such as India and Vietnam.

  • Apple’s iPhone 12 will feature a major redesign, marking the first time in three years that Apple will release a new iPhone model with an updated design.
  • Both the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro models Apple releases in 2020 will feature a new look with flat metal edges reminiscent of the iPhone 5’s beloved design.
  • The higher-end iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max are expected to be made available in a totally new color that leaked recently, and now a new video imagines Apple’s upcoming new iPhone 12 Pro in the stunning new color.
  • .

When it comes to Apple’s iPhone 12 release and its iPhone 9 release that was expected in the coming weeks, everything seems to be up in the air right now. A report just yesterday suggested that not because of manufacturing issues, but because the company doesn’t want to encourage people to gather en masse at its stores in light of the novel coronavirus outbreak. As a reminder, the iPhone 9 is also referred to as “iPhone SE 2,” and it’s expected to be a lower-cost iPhone starting at $399 that uses the iPhone 8’s design with updated specs in line with the iPhone 11.

Stunning iPhone 12 design video shows Apple’s new leaked color

As far as Apple’s new flagship iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro are concerned, things are even more unclear right now. Numerous reports suggest that the COVID-19 outbreak will force Apple to delay its iPhone 12 release until October or possibly November, though the company still might announce the phones in September. That doesn’t sound too terrible, but there’s one slight problem: many experts believe that the coronavirus outbreak will continue to get worse and worse in the coming months. If it does, there’s no telling what might happen to Apple’s plans for the iPhone 12. As of Thursday morning, there are more than 120,000 confirmed cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus and the spread isn’t expected to slow down anytime soon. Regardless of when Apple finally releases its iPhone 12 lineup, however, we already know plenty about the new design and features thanks to numerous leaks from reliable sources. Now, a new video helps visualize everything we’ve heard, and it also shows Apple’s new iPhone 12 Pro in the stunning new color that leaked earlier this year.

Most of what we know so far about Apple’s upcoming iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro series smartphones comes from TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. He has been the most prolific and most accurate Apple insider for years, and he’s had plenty to say about the iPhone 12 series since even before the iPhone 11 was released.

Stunning iPhone 12 design video shows Apple’s new leaked color

According to Kuo’s reporting, Apple will release not three but four new flagship models this year. Two will be iPhone 12 models with different screen sizes, and then there will be a 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro and a 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max. All four phones will apparently feature OLED screens and 5G support, while the iPhone 12 Pro phones will get upgraded triple-lens rear camera systems with a new time of flight (ToF) sensor.

A .

In the earlier leak, Max Weinbach claimed that Apple is planning to release the iPhone 12 Pro in an exciting new color that will replace Midnight Green in Apple’s current iPhone 11 Pro lineup. The new color is supposedly called Midnight Blue, and it will reportedly be a deep navy blue color that will be made available alongside Space Gray, Silver, and Gold. Deep navy blue sounds far more appealing than the dark green color that’s currently available, and now a new video created by YouTube channel Technizo attempts to visualize the iPhone 12 Pro in the stunning new color.

Stunning iPhone 12 design video shows Apple’s new leaked color

The majority of the video shows Apple’s leaked iPhone 12 Pro design in Space Gray, and it’s pretty close to what we expect to see later this year when Apple officially takes the wraps off of the iPhone 12 Pro. The one big mistake with this video is the same mistake we’ve seen in countless other iPhone 12 Pro visualizations — Apple’s new Pro models will have a triple-lens rear camera with an additional small ToF sensor added in. These renders, on the other hand, show a quad-lens camera.

The Midnight Blue iPhone 12 Pro makes its first appearance around the 53-second mark, and the hue shown in the video looks like it could indeed be pretty close to the real thing. We won’t know for certain until Apple unveils the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro this coming September, but you can check out the video below to tide you over in the meantime.

Camera Comparison: IPhone 11 Pro Max Vs. Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra Iphone 12 Vs Iphone 11 Pro Max

Camera Comparison: IPhone 11 Pro Max Vs. Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra Iphone 12 Vs Iphone 11 Pro Max

Camera Comparison: iPhone 11 Pro Max vs. Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra

Earlier this week we picked up a Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra and to see if it's worth $1,400, but we also thought we'd take a deeper look at Samsung's newest smartphone to see how the cameras measure up to the cameras in Apple's iPhone 11 Pro Max.

for more videos.

Hardware Details

Samsung's Galaxy S20 Ultra, like the iPhone, has a multi-lens rear camera setup. There's a 108-megapixel wide-angle camera, a 12-megapixel ultra wide-angle camera, a 48-megapixel telephoto camera, and a DepthVision Camera for portrait shots.

For comparison's sake, the iPhone is sporting a 12-megapixel ultra wide-angle camera, a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera, and a 12-megapixel telephoto camera.

Portrait Mode

When it comes to Portrait mode photos, the Galaxy S20 Ultra wins out thanks to that depth sensor. There's not a major difference, but the images coming from the S20 Ultra appear to be sharper and the edge detection is better. The iPhone does win out when it comes to dynamic range, and the S20 Ultra seems to have a bit of desaturation in some images, but overall, the S20 Ultra wins this category.

Standard Camera Tests

When it comes to standard photos using the three different lenses on each camera, we actually preferred the iPhone images for the most part because the iPhone offered more balanced color and better dynamic range, but with high-end smartphone cameras, a lot comes down to personal preference.

The S20 Ultra seems to be overexposing highlights in images with the sun and clouds, resulting in too much contrast. In images with less dynamic lighting, the results are closer and both look great.

The exception here is the ultra wide-angle camera. The S20 Ultra is just producing a sharper, crisper ultra wide-angle picture, while the iPhone produces a softer image. That's not too much of a surprise, though, because the sensor of Apple's ultra wide-angle lens isn't as good as the sensor in Apple's wide-angle camera lens.

S20 Ultra Space Zoom

The Galaxy S20 Ultra has some bells and whistles worth pointing out, such as a 100X "Space Zoom" feature. The iPhone 11 Pro Max maxes out at 10X digital zoom. The S20 Ultra clearly wins here, though you're not going to get a lot of use out of 100X zoom photos.

What is impressive, though, is photos taken with the 30X zoom feature. Samsung's 30X zoom pictures are crisper and clearer than Apple's 10x zoom photos.

S20 Ultra Single Take

There's also a "Single Take" feature that takes photos and videos from different angles and then spits out a bunch of different options like Boomerang-style videos, pictures with filters, videos with music, and more, so you have this kind of auto editing feature that can produce some interesting photo and video options you might not have thought to do on your own.

S20 Ultra 108-Megapixel Camera

We do need to mention that massive 108-megapixel camera. It definitely has focus issues at the current time, and it's hard to get it to focus.

When it does work, it can provide sharp, detailed photos that are great if you need to crop in, and it has great depth of field for some nice background bokeh.

A 108-megapixel camera produces massive file sizes, so this isn't a lens you're going to want to use often. Luckily, Samsung did built in a feature that lets it take more reasonable 12-megapixel photos.

Night Mode

Both phones have a Night Mode, and both Night Modes work fairly well. On the Galaxy S20 Ultra, it's a mode you need to enable that's not turned on by default, which is a bit of a hassle.

The iPhone seems to have better HDR processing and delivers a more usable photo in extreme low lighting conditions. In situations with just a bit more light, though, it's a wash - both produce nice images.

Video Comparison

One of the Galaxy S20 Ultra's major new features is 8K video, which is higher quality than the 4K video offered by the iPhone. 8K video from the S20 Ultra looks great, but image stabilization is poor, which means the 8K video is not as good as it sounds on paper.

When comparing 8K video from the S20 Ultra to 4K video shot on the iPhone 11 Pro (both at 24 frames per second because that's the max for the S20), the S20 Ultra's crop factor, rolling shutter, and lack of stabilization are highly noticeable.

Pitting 4K video against 4K video (at 60fps), both cameras perform similarly in terms of stabilization and focus, though the iPhone 11 Pro Max seems to be just a bit more stable. Both are just about equal, though.

Front-Facing Camera

As for the front-facing camera, there's a 40-megapixel selfie camera with an f/2.2 aperture in the Galaxy S20 Ultra, while the iPhone 11 Pro Max features a 12-megapixel camera with an f/2.2 aperture.

You might think the 40-megapixel camera is significantly better, but we didn't see a whole lot of difference between the S20 Ultra and the iPhone 11 Pro Max. Samsung does have a "beauty mode" that we turned off, while the iPhone has no similar mode that can be toggled on.

Conclusion

In a nutshell, as with most high-end smartphone camera comparisons, there's no crystal clear winner. Both the Galaxy S20 Ultra and the iPhone 11 Pro Max have good cameras that are capable of capturing some amazing photos in good lighting conditions.

The iPhone wins out when it comes to dynamic range and video stabilization, but the S20 has better portrait mode photos. Standard point and shoot images are going to come down to personal preference, so make sure to watch the video to see all of our comparisons.

Behold: This is what Apple’s completely new iPhone 12 design might look like

There are still almost two full months left in 2019, but the year is already over as far as smartphone fans are concerned. There are no more big releases set to take place this year, though we will get a peek at the new RAZR revival that Motorola cooked up. It’s exciting indeed, with the same slim clamshell form factor as the original, but with a large folding display inside. We can’t wait to get our hands on it, but sadly we’re going to have to since Motorola isn’t expected to actually release it until sometime next year.

Behold: This is what Apple’s completely new iPhone 12 design might look like

With nothing else of note set to be released in 2019, our attention now turns to 2020. Samsung is expected to start off the year with the Galaxy S11, which should debut sometime in February ahead of a March release. We’ll also see a new Galaxy Fold 2 at some point during the year, and other vendors have all sorts of nifty new flagship phones planned for 2020. Of course, there’s one new smartphone series that’s already generating much more hype than the rest despite being more than 10 months away from launching. That’s right, we’re talking about the new iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max that will be announced sometime in September 2020. It’s still early days, of course, but we already know a bit about the iPhone 12 series’ overhauled design thanks to reports from the world’s most accurate Apple insider. Now, a smartphone blog has taken what we know about the iPhone 12 and used that info to imagine what Apple’s reinvented iPhone might look like next year.

If you follow Apple rumors, you know that TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is the source of all the most accurate leaks surrounding Apple products. He has solid sources in Apple’s supply chain, so he always gets plenty of early information about iPhones, iPads, Mac computers, and more. Regarding next year’s iPhone 12 lineup, Kuo has already dished plenty of dirt. We can expect 5G support, a smaller 5.4-inch OLED for the iPhone 12 Pro, ProMotion 120Hz refresh rates, and more.

On top of all that, however, Kuo says there’s also a huge design overhaul coming to the iPhone 12 series that harkens back to the flat metal edges from models like the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5. Tons of Apple fans out there maintain that the company’s old iPhone 5 design was their favorite of all time, so this is great news.

A gadget blog called Phone Arena read all the same reports you have, and it decided to . The resulting renders could end up being pretty close to the actual iPhone 12 smartphones that Apple releases in 2020, though there are a few obvious mistakes that were made.

The overall look and shape of the iPhone 12 Pro pictured in these renders is probably quite accurate, but there are a few details that likely won’t pan out. The biggest problem may end up being the camera on the back. Rumor has it Apple’s new iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max could add a time of flight (ToF) sensor to the camera array on the back, and Phone Arena took that to mean a fourth full-size sensor will sprout up. In all likelihood, however, Apple will use a newer ToF sensor that’s about the size of the iPhone 11’s LED flash, or maybe even smaller.

We’ve heard rumors that Apple will do a better job of blending the antenna lines on the iPhone 12 series, and we’re also not sure the iPhone 12’s new notch will be shaped quite like the one seen here. Still, the overall design is likely close to what we’ll see on the iPhone 12, so this could be a good way to get a taste of things to come. You’ll find more renders over on if you want to check them out.
